An Orderly Account for Teaching the Truth
Easy Print Version on Luke 1:1-4 for Handouts

Luke 1:1-4

1 Since many have undertaken to set down an orderly account of the events that have been fulfilled among us, 2 just as they were handed on to us by those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word, 3 I too decided, after investigating everything carefully from the very first, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, 4 so that you may know the truth concerning the things about which you have been instructed. — NRSV

2 Timothy 3:16-17

16 All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 so that everyone who belongs to God may be proficient, equipped for every good work. — NRSV

BIBLE QUESTIONS FOR THINKING PEOPLE

Why do you think many people wanted to record their experiences with Jesus? Why was it important to write down these experiences for others?

Why do you think Luke emphasized that he was going to write his gospel based on eyewitness accounts?

What does it mean to be a “servant of the word”? Do you think Luke wrote as a servant of the word?

The name Theophilus means “lover of God.” How can loving God improve our interpretation and understanding of the word of God?

Why do you think Luke wanted to emphasize knowing “the truth;” that Theophilus needed to know the truth? Why is it important for us to study Luke as a means of knowing the truth about the Christian faith? Compare Luke’s words to 2 Timothy 3:16-17.
