Mary's Song of Praise
Easy Print Version on Luke 1:46-55 for Handouts

Luke 1:46-55

46 And Mary said, My soul magnifies the Lord, 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, 48 for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; 49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name. 50 His mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. 51 He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. 52 He has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; 53 he has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty. 54 He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, 55 according to the promise he made to our ancestors, to Abraham and to his descendants forever." — NRSV

Isaiah 53:1-3

1 Who has believed what we have heard?
And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?
2 For he grew up before him like a young plant,
and like a root out of dry ground;
he had no form or majesty that we should look at him,
nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.
3 He was despised and rejected by others;
a man of suffering and acquainted with infirmity;
and as one from whom others hide their faces
he was despised, and we held him of no account. — NRSV

BIBLE QUESTIONS FOR THINKING PEOPLE

Why do you think God the Father chose to give His Son, the Messiah, an outward appearance that did not reveal His majesty and was not desirable to look at? How does the description in Isaiah 53 compare to the pictures of Jesus that you have seen?

Read Isaiah 53:3 again. What things happened to Jesus that fulfilled this ancient prophecy?

Why does Mary feel it important to speak of God as both “God my Savior” and “the Mighty One”? Why do you think these descriptions would be important to her? Are they important to you? Why or why not? How could they encourage others today?

What reasons does Mary give for God helping Israel? In your daily walk, which reasons seem most important to you?

What does God do to the proud, the powerful, and the rich? Why do you think Mary mentions this in her words of praise to God? What does God do for those who fear Him, the lowly, and the hungry? How does this encourage you?
